THE PEOPLE OF HONDURAS
There are over 6,000,000 people in Honduras and this number is expected to double in number by 2030. Females have a life expectancy of 66 years: males 63 years. 73% of adults are literate. 47% of the population lives on less than $1 a day. 13% of the population does not have access to safe water and 31% live without access to adequate health services. Out of 174 nations, Honduras ranks 119 on the U.N. Human Development Index.
Honduras has managed to escape the civil wars that have wracked most of Central America and has had democratic elections since 1981. However it bore the brunt of Hurricane Mitch in 1999, the worst storm to hit the Caribbean in 200 years. That storm destroyed 50 years of economic progress in the country. As a result of this and prior economic problems, Honduras deals with staggering foreign debts.
Honduras has one of the most progressive labor codes in Latin America.
